| Pacific Outdoors Premier Rifle Rest by Pacific Cycle, Inc. Not-So-Premier Rifle Rest | I specifically purchased this "Premier Rifle Rest" for my M4 carbine rifle. My father likes to go to the range with me and enjoys shooting the M4 while I shoot my target rifle. I/we had previously been using an Outers Varminter Rifle Rest for the M4, which does not allow for the use of a 30 round magazine. I could only use a 10 round magazine with that rest. The two-rail design of the "Premier Rifle Rest" allows for a 30 round magazine to be used, which was the key feature I was looking for with a reasonable price tag attached.
I do have to say that this "Premier Rifle Rest" has the "potential" for being a good rest. It does have a heavy, sturdy rock solid base, a must have in my book. Other than that, I have nothing good to say for this rest the way it arrived. It was made in China, which might be the main factor in my issues with this rest. First problem right out of the box, two of the three the felt pads on the gun vice had fallen off. The peg in the vice fell out. The glue used to hold the peg and felt sucks. The felt on the barrel rest and butt rest is also coming off. I will have to get some epoxy to secure better.
The hole in the front frame that the barrel rest fits into is drilled oversize. The stud averages 0.737" in diameter with my digital calipers, and the hole averages 0.777" in diameter. That's 0.040" of slop in the fit. The thickness of a credit card is about 0.030" and a dime is about 0.050". Not only does that slop allow for 40 thou side to side movement, but allows the stud to tilt diagonally in that hole as well giving a lot of play in the front end. That is just bad manufacturing.
Front vertical adjustment is horrible. It is rough and not smooth at all. I suggest a needle thrust bearing like 5909K33 from McMaster Carr to smooth it out if you want to go through the trouble. The rear adjustment peg is not long enough for my M4 with a collapsible stock. It will only work for an AR with a solid buttstock.
I have the luxury of working with a machine shop where I can have bushings installed in the front frame to eliminate the slop, and I can have another longer peg made for the rear butt rest. I also have access to similar needle bearings above. Most people don't have access to fixes like these. It was a "fixer-upper" project for me.
If you are looking for a plinking rest with a lot of slop in the front end and don't mind re-gluing a pad or two, this rest would be ok. If you are looking for any type of precision shooting platform, this Not-So-Premier Rifle Rest is Not-For-You.

Delicious Library 2 released
Ars Technica: “DL2 brings some pretty significant new features and a freshly updated UI. At the top of the list is the ability to catalog far more than just media like DVDs and books; users can now keep track of their gadgets, toys, tools, and just about anything else that Amazon carries. Speaking of media, though, DL2 now also catalogs your entire iTunes library, including music, movies, TV shows, and even audiobooks.”
More awesome software from the Pacific Northwest. ;)
Congrats to Wil! And to Lucas and Mike, of course, even though they’re not still Monsters.
