| Thule 835XT Hull-A-Port Rooftop Kayak Carrier by Thule great rack |
The rack works great. I can load and secure two kayaks in under 10 min. I used to take 40 min. I would recommend them.
The only issue was with installation. At one point I hit a problem and had to search the web for an answer. I found it in a forum on the Thule web site. That issue doubled the installation time. A troubleshooting section in the installation guide would have been nice. |
| Thule 835XT Hull-A-Port Rooftop Kayak Carrier by Thule easiest and most secure kayak carrier ever. |
the kayak carriers were so easy to install on top of my car and place the kayaks in it was wonderful. with the tie straps they tied off well and rode great . it made the unloading of the kayaks so easy once we arrived at the lake.
I would highly recomend them for anyone contemplating moving kayaks from one place to another. they rode very secure and placement and removal was a breeze. |
| Thule 835XT Hull-A-Port Rooftop Kayak Carrier by Thule great product |
| these things work great. i had the foam block and strap kit before this and that was an increadible pain and it also didn't keep the kayak up off of my roof and scratched it all up. it only takes a few minutes to put these on and load my kayak. my only complaint, and it is a small one, is that the thumb screws are a little on the small side. i have to agree with the reviewer that said about the clamp attachment or at least a bigger thumb screw. other than that this is a great product. it also fit onto my yakima roof rack with no problem. |

| During my travels, I have seen many kyaks being carried by the Thule carriers. Since they are not cheaply made, I considered buying one for my 14' touring kayak. After reading some of the reviews on Amazon, I was surprised to find out that they are no longer manufactured in Sweden-but are made in the USA (gladly not in China). I assembled them easily and put them on my Honda rack and they performed outstandingly. Fortunately, Amazon had them on sale and I saved $30 over the cost of other retailers! |
| Thule 835XT Hull-A-Port Rooftop Kayak Carrier by Thule Better than other options |
These are quite popular in NH where it seems like every 5th car has kayaks on the roof. We got a pair and they're quite easy to attach. Be quite careful to tighten the thumbscrew enough. The first time down the road, one kayak slid slightly sideways sticking out towards the center of the highway. The front rack was loose enough to slide. We're going to use a strap between the two racks at the top which will provide extra security against that and very carefully tighten the thumbscrews. The screw was barely long enough for our roof rack.
Most people don't use the provided straps to attach to the front and rear bumpers. We will, since the sales people told a scary story about a kayak sliding out from under the top straps (when a car was rear-ended) and damaging the car behind it.
We didn't find it very easy to get the kayak down from the rack. In fact we barely escaped injuring ourselves. The kayak is pretty tough, so it wasn't damaged in our bungled attempt. Removing the 2nd kayak was easier, but we used 3 people for it.
Putting the kayak on is easy if you're really strong. Just pick it up near the center and hoist it over your head, placing it sideways on the rack. You might want to try hefting your kayak this way to see if you have enough upper body strength.
The alternate way is to lean the end of the kayak on the back roof, then slide it up to the rack.
The straps are in the kit, so you don't have to buy those separately. This seems more secure than the bits of foam and odd straps that are otherwise available for rooftop kayak portage. |
